Sweater School 4: Moby Sweater w/ Shannon

You've mastered Sweater School and you're ready to tackle new techniques - join Shannon for Sweater School 4! 

In this a 6 session (7 week) class, students will learn:

• Drop-sleeve, top-down sweater
• Picking up stitches for shoulders and sleeves
• Cables, charts, mock cables, moss stitch - buckle up!

This advanced knitting class does require some time intensive homework to stay on track - please reference the class outline below. Students should have already completed Sweater School or completed multiple sweater or knitted garment project(s) on their own. 

Before class, students should buy and wind yarn, and make a gauge swatch - the instructor will work with students remotely for assistance with this part. When signing up for this class, please make sure to use a current email address.

Class Overview

• Before first class: Make gauge swatch and wet block it then measure it again to determine your gauge and needle size. Carefully mark your determined needle size(s) throughout the pattern.Wind yarn. Cast on stitches required for class.
• Week 1: Begin short row shaping of the back yoke: German short rows, left and right crosses (mock cables), knit and purl through the back loop. Cables! (3 hours)
  Homework: Continue back yoke chart.
• Week 2: Continue on back yoke chart. (2 hours)
  Homework: Finish back yoke.
• Week 3: Pick up stitches for left and right shoulders. (2 hours)
  Homework: Complete left and right shoulders.
• Week 4: Join the left and front shoulders together, begin working the front of the sweater. (2 hours)
  Homework: Finish front yoke, join in the round.
• Week 5: BREAK - No class, continue the body of sweater.
• Week 6 (class 5): Pick up stitches for sleeves, continue in sleeve pattern.
  Homework: Continue on the body and sleeves.
• Week 7 (class 6): Italian bind off for the body and/or sleeves. Demo for picking up stitches for the folded neckline.

Skill Level: Advanced 

Advanced classes are the most advanced of our lessons, for students who are eager to master more difficult techniques with some assistance. Students in each craft will need to have previously completed several projects on their own.

Class prep: 

• Purchase and print pattern, the Moby Sweater by Petite Knit - please purchase online: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/moby-sweater. If you don’t have a Ravelry account and don’t want to create one, you can purchase and print the pattern at the shop. You will want to have your pattern on paper, rather than on a digital device for this class
• Purchase and wind yarn.
• Make a gauge swatch (instructor will send detailed instructions prior to class). 
  

Materials (not included, but all classroom materials purchased at Sew To Speak receive a 15% discount):

Garment sizes are 30½-33½ (33½-35½) 35½-37½ (37½-39½) 39½-43¼ (43¼-47¼) 47¼-51¼ (51¼-55) 55-59 inches bust, around chest at underarms. Garment is recommended to be worn with an ease of 6-8 inches.

• Recommended yarn: DK weight + Fingering weight (held together) OR Worsted Weight.
  1200 (1300) 1400 (1500) 1600 (1700) 1800 (1900) 2000 yds. If you are using DK + Fingering, you need this yardage in both yarns.
  
  Recommended yarns: A solid color is best to see the cable textures!
  Worsted: Woolstok worsted, Blue Sky Sweater Worsted, Malabrigo Rios, and more!
  DK: Bread and Butter Everyday OR Pretzel, Farmer’s Daughter Jucy DK, Fingering (mohair): Blue sky yarns Prairie, Kelbourne Woolens Harmony
  
  Questions about choosing the correct size? Your instructor will be available to answer questions by email prior to class.

• Needles:
  Circular needles: An interchangeable needle set is not required, but recommended if you have one or are ready to invest in one.
  4 mm [US6] / 16, 24, 32 and/or 40 inches
  3.5 mm [US4] 32 and/or 40 inches
  3 mm [US2½] / 16 inches
  Cable needle
  Double-pointed needles: 4 mm [US6] and 3.5 mm [US4]

Note: Larger sizes and those who prefer more slack for magic loop (sleeves) may also prefer 40" cords. An interchangeable needle set is not required, but recommended if you have one or are ready to invest in one.

• Row counter
• Clipboard or magnetic board (cocoknits has a cute one) to help track your cable chart.
• Closed stitch markers (many!)
• Darning needle, measuring tape, scissors.

Class Cancellation Policy

Please note on our cancellation policy for multi-week school classes - ie: Sewing School, Quilt School, Knitting & Sweater Schools, Garment Schools:

• Class cancellations made within four weeks of the class start date cannot be refunded, credited, or rescheduled.

If you must miss a class in a series, please contact the instructor for make-up options. The instructor may request that you schedule a private lesson in order to catch up or finish your project. Private Instruction fees are $35-$60 per hour.
