Description

You've mastered Sweater School and you're ready to tackle new techniques - join Shannon for Sweater School 3!

In this 4 lesson class (5th session optional), students will learn:

  • stranded colorwork in the round, knitting a colorwork yoke with increases.
  • short rows.
  • tubular cast off.

Please note that this Advanced knitting class does require some time intensive homework to stay on track - please reference the class outline below. Students should have already completed Sweater School or completed a simple sweater or knitted garment project(s) on their own.

Before class, students should buy and wind yarn, and make a gauge swatch - the instructor will work with students remotely for assistance with this part. When signing up for this class, please make sure to use a current email address.

Class Overview:

  • Before first class: make gauge swatch and wet block it. Cast on, complete ribbing of neckline and sweater to beginning of colorwork chart.
Homework: get to colorwork chart start.
  • Week 1: Begin colorwork yoke! Learn to read the chart and place where the increases occur.
Homework: Get through row 25 of colorwork chart.
  • Week 2: Discuss questions from colorwork homework, and continue on colorwork yoke together.
Homework: Complete colorwork yoke and get to sleeve split.
  • Week 3: Split for sleeves, short rows, continue working body in the round.
Homework: Work body AND sleeves to colorwork on sleeves.
  • Week 4: No class, continue finishing the body of your sweater (including ribbing)
  • Week 5: Tubular bind off for body! Place sleeve stitches from hold onto needles.
  • Week 6: Optional - Lower sleeve detail colorwork!

Ages 18+

Skill Level: Advanced

Advanced classes are the most advanced of our lessons, for students who are eager to master more difficult techniques with some assistance. Students in each craft will need to have previously completed several projects on their own.

*Unsure if you’re ready for an Adult Advanced class? Email info@sewtospeakshoppe.com to discuss your skill level!

Class prep:

  • Purchase and wind yarn, make a gauge swatch (instructor will sed detailed instructions prior to class).
  • Purchase and print pattern, the Lumme Pullover by Sari Nordlund - please purchase online.
    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lumme-pullover.
If you don’t have a ravelry account and don’t want to create one, you can purchase and print the pattern at the shop. You will want to have your pattern on paper, rather than on a digital device, for this class.
  • Cast on sweater, complete ribbing on neckline, and knit to beginning of colorwork on sweater.

Materials (not included, but all classroom materials purchased at Sew To Speak receive a 15% discount):

Garment sizes are 31.5 (35.75, 39.25, 43.75, 47.25, 51.5, 55, 59.5, 63)” bust, around chest at under arms. Garment is recommended to be worn with an ease of 2-3 inches.

  • Recommended yarn: Worsted weight - choose high contrast colors for best results! We like Blue Sky Woolstok Worsted and Sweater Worsted, or Malabrigo Rios for this project.
    Main color: 700 (750, 825, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1325, 1450) yards
    Contrast color: 175 (200, 225, 250, 275, 300, 325, 350, 400) yards

Questions about choosing the correct size? Your instructor will be available to answer questions by email prior to class.

  • Needles:
US 6/ 4mm circular needles on 24", and 32" cords (or size needed to make gauge). DPNs for sleeves, or 40” for magic loop. (ribbing for neckline, sleeve cuffs, and hem)
US 7/ 4.5mm circular needles on 24", and 32" cords (or size needed to make gauge). DPNs for sleeves, or 40” for magic loop. (main body and sleeves without colorwork)
US 8/ 5mm circular needles on 24", and 32" cords (or size needed to make gauge). DPNs for sleeves, or 40” for magic loop. (colorwork on yoke and sleeves)

Note: Larger sizes and those who prefer more slack for magic loop (sleeves) may also prefer 40" cords (in place of 32"). An interchangeable needle set is not required, but recommended if you have one or are ready to invest in one.

  • Barber cords (or waste yarn, but barber cords are really worth the hype).
  • Closed stitch markers (many!).
