Are you ready to learn to sew clothes and cute gathers and ruffles? In this class you will learn the basics of self-drafting and sewing an elastic waist skirt. You will have the option to keep it simple, or add a ruffled tier to the bottom.
You will walk away with a finished skirt and learn the following skills:
- Hemming.
- Accurately measuring yourself for a basic skirt.
- Sewing elastic waistbands.
- Gathering fabric to create ruffles (optional).
- How to neatly finish your seams (Using a serger/zigzag or French Seams).
Ages 18+
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Advanced Beginner classes are designed as “next step” classes to build basic skills. Sewing students must have taken Sewing 101 and/or be comfortable threading their machines and sewing simple projects.
If you need a refresher on how to use your machine - Nat is available before the first class for a 30 min private lesson ($20/person).
Supplies (Students will receive a 15% discount on class supplies purchased at Sew to Speak):

2-4 yards of fabric: Lightweight cotton lawn, Linen, Cotton Essex, Linen Brussels would be ideal for this project. You want a fabric that is lightweight, breathable and has a nice drape. Even an upcycled bed sheet would be a good option!
NOTE: To determine your amount of fabric needed- Please email Nat (neighborhoodpatterns@gmail.com) with your waist and hip measurement. As well as the length you would like your skirt to be. (ex: waist 32”, hip 42”, length: 22”) She will assist you in determining the amount of fabric you need to purchase.
- Matching thread color and bobbin (please come to class with your bobbin already wound)
- 1-2 yards - 1.5” waistband elastic (non-roll or knit elastic) - Please buy enough to wrap around your waist.
