Description

Learn Sashiko with Mary Lee!

Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique that began as a functional mending method, but which is now also decorative. The primary stitch used is a running stitch, but the way the stitch is made is slightly different from a Western running stitch. Besides learning the Sashiko stitching method, students will learn tips for drawing the grid used for many patterns, four traditional Sashiko patterns, and the way Sashiko stitching can be used for original designs.

Students will stitch five squares of Sashiko that can be turned into coasters or patches or elements in a table runner. We will begin with a basic pattern of crosses (Jyuji-sashi). The second and third patterns are variations of Jyuji-sahsi. The fourth pattern is connected stairs (Dan-tsunagi) which is the foundation for several classic Sashiko patterns. Our final square will be a simple original design we sketch and stitch with Sashiko running stitches and no particular Sashiko pattern.
