Welcome to functional fit! This class is designed to introduce you to the fundamental concepts of fitting a sewing pattern to your unique body so that you can start making clothing that is functional for you.
The core principle of this course is that you can make garments that work for you by taking accurate measurements and then making the pattern do the heavy lifting. We’ll talk about what sewing patterns are, how they use ease to create both fit and style, and how to “read” a sewing pattern to get a better fit right out of the gate. Throughout, we’ll help each other take and record our body measurements as a foundation for creating clothes that fit our bodies exactly as they are.
Students will learn how to:
- Take accurate body measurements
- Read sewing pattern measurement charts to select sizes
- Grade between sizes
- Take flat pattern measurements
- Adjust the length of a flat pattern
You will not sew a garment in this class. Instead, you will leave with a worksheet of your body measurements and a set of steps for using those measurements to make a garment that will fit your body.
Ages: 18+
Class Level: Advanced Beginner
Advanced Beginner classes are designed as “next step” classes to build basic skills. Sewing students must have taken Sewing 101 and/or be comfortable threading their machines and sewing simple projects.

Class Prep:
- In order to take accurate measurements, please come to class wearing your standard bra and underwear and thin, fitted, stretchy clothing. We recommend leggings (NOT compression leggings) and a fitted t-shirt or camisole. You’re of course welcome to wear a looser layer over top that you can remove for taking measurements.
Supplies (not included, but all class materials will receive a 15% discount when purchased at Sew To Speak):
- Flexible tape measure (preferably with a crotch piece, but not necessary)
- Writing utensils
- Three pieces of thin cord, yarn, or elastic (¼” wide or less) that are long enough to be tied around your bust, waist, and hips
- Optional: retractable body self measuring tape
