Build on your skills and learn how to add unique texture and touches to any quilting project by hand quilting! This is a great project for quilting beginners and beyond to expand your quilting techniques. We’ll focus on learning hand quilting and hand binding by creating a single fabric (AKA whole cloth) lap quilt.
You’ll learn basic quilt construction, how to sandwich and baste your project, creating and stitching your big stitch design, as well as different hand binding techniques.
Ages 18+
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Advanced Beginner classes are designed as “next step” classes to build basic skills. Sewing students must have taken Sewing 101 and/or be comfortable threading their machines and sewing simple projects.

Supplies (Not included, but all materials will be purchased during class. Students will receive a 15% discount):
- Fabric: This project will use a single fabric on each side of the lap-sized quilt. You can choose if you’d like the same or different fabric for each side of your quilt. For same fabric: 3 yards. For different on each side: 1 ½ yards each of two fabrics. Quilting cottons or double gauze are great choices for this project.
- Binding: 5 ½ yd of pre-made binding or ½ yd of fabric to make binding.
- Thread: Thicker threads like Scheepjes Candy Floss, pearl cotton, sashiko thread or top stitch thread in the color of your choice for the hand quilting, and cotton sewing thread (Sew-all Guterman 109yd/100m thread) for the hand binding.
- Notions: A larger needle for hand quilting like Sashiko needles, and a smaller sewing/embroidery needle for the hand binding.
Optional Notions: (These tools are great if you have them, but if not, the shop will have these available during class.)
- Measuring tape
- Pins
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- A fabric marker/chalk
- Seam gauge
- Seam ripper
- Sewing machine if you have one
