Advanced Beginner classes are designed as “next step” classes to build basic skills. Sewing students must have taken Sewing 101 and/or be comfortable threading their machines and sewing simple projects.
Learn more about our class levels.
Class Prep:
- Pre-wash fabric.
Supplies (Not included but students will receive a 15% discount when purchased at Sew to Speak):
- Pattern: 100 Acts of Sewing - Shirt No. 101: Available here, at Sew To Speak.
-
Pattern: Lane Pants by Syd Graham: PDF only, available here: https://sydgraham.com/products/lane-pants-sewing-pattern
- You will need to purchase the pattern, but we will have it printed at class for you to trace your size. You will also learn how make sure you print a digital pattern correctly for the future. We will follow the simple option (no drawstring, no cargo pockets).
-
Fabric
- Essex Linen or Brussels Washer, or another fabric that drapes for both the shirt and shorts/pants (We do not recommend 100% cotton).
- We recommend choosing non-striped or plaid fabric if these are your first garments.
- Shirt: Use your pattern as a guide for your size, but 1.5-2 yds will cover all sizes
- Shorts and Pants: Between 1.5-3 yds for the shorts depending on sizes. Many sizes of shorts will be covered by 2 yds. Smallest sizes could use 1.5 yds. Largest sizes need 3 yds for the shorts. Between 2.5-5 yards for the pants (see pattern website for exact yardage).
- Sewing Machine (we have classroom machines available to use during class at no extra charge, please email the shop if you will need to use one)
- Thread to match your fabric
- 1.5” soft elastic (for the waistband - one Dritz package is plenty for all sizes).
- General sewing notions - pins, extra machine needles, scissors, marking pen, seam ripper.
- Tracing Paper - 4-5 yards for pants, 3 yards for shorts, 2 yards for shirt (if you don’t want to cut out your actual pattern).
