Welcome to garment school- our boxer shorts version!
In this session we will be working with a size and gender inclusive boxer short pattern.
The focus of this class is on technique and construction while creating a garment you will be proud to wear!
Skills learned will include: Measuring relevant parts of your body, printing a digital pattern correctly, basics of garment construction and fit, inserting an elastic waistband, french seams, finishing raw edges, and hemming.
Ages 18+
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Advanced Beginner classes are designed as “next step” classes to build basic skills. Sewing students must have taken Sewing 101 and/or be comfortable threading their machines and sewing simple projects.
Learn more about our class levels.
Class Prep:
- Pre-wash fabric.
- Buy digital pattern (We will trace our pattern together in class, so there's no need to print your pattern unless you want your own copy.)
Supplies (not included but students will receive a 15% discount when purchased at Sew to Speak):
-
Fabric - We recommend Robert Kaufman Essex linen, or any fabric that drapes. (Note: We do not recommend 100% cotton.)
- Between 1.5 and 3 yds depending on the size you'll be making. Many sizes will be covered by 2 yds, while the largest will use 3 yds. Prior to class, your instructor, Caitlin, will discuss size options with each student to determine how much fabric to bring with you.
- Pattern - The Lane Pants by Syd Graham. Please use the link to purchase, as this is an online only pattern. Students will need to purchase the pattern, but we will have it printed at class for you to trace your size. You will also learn how to print a digital pattern correctly for future projects. We will follow the simple option (no drawstring, no cargo pockets).
- Sewing Machine (We have classroom machines available to use during class at no extra charge, please email the shop if you will need to use one.)
- Thread to match your fabric.
- 1.5” soft elastic (for the waistband - one Dritz package is plenty for all sizes)
- General sewing notions - pins, extra machine needles, scissors, marking pen, seam ripper
- Tracing Paper - 2-3 yards
