Description

Make a quilt to last for generations in our heirloom quilt class! In this 6 session class (5 online zoom classes plus an in person, masked, outdoor dye day) you will learn the rich history of natural dyes and quilting, dye all the yardage needed for a 54” square lap quilt, and learn to machine piece, baste, hand quilt, and bind your quilt. 

One dye day in person. The other classes are taught via Zoom 

Class schedule:

Zoom classes will take place from 12-2pm EST but recordings will be made available to students. Dye day will be from 12-4pm EST April 24th with a rain date in case of inclement weather. 

Week 1: 2 hour zoom class with guest speaker Janette Knowles on the history of natural dyes and quilting.

Week 2: Dye day! Join Rachel on the Sew to Speak lawn to dye your fabric the full rainbow of colors using madder, marigold, logwood, and indigo! 

Week 3: Cutting and piecing your quilt top - based on the Moda Jelly Roll Rainbow pattern. 

Week 4: Basting and hand quilting. We will cover a range of hand quilting styles and materials. 

Week 5: Check in on hand quilting

Week 6: Binding your quilt and making a label


Class kit includes:

7.5 yards of Kona cotton (enough for quilt top, backing, and binding), which will be mordanted for students before the dye day. 

Indigo, madder, marigold, and logwood dye baths

Instructions for future home dyeing


Students provide: 

Sewing tools and notions (the quilt will be machine pieced but students can hand piece if they want to)

Their batting

Piecing and hand quilting thread

Needles and thimble

Any additional undyed fabric for use in their quilt top if desired


Class cost

$250 for the class, plus a $100 materials fee, kit is included !!!!


Non-Columbus Based Students: Students interested in the class who cannot participate in the in-person dye day can have their fabrics dyed for them by the instructor on the dye day and mailed to them (for an additional shipping charge). Out of town students with previous natural dye experience can opt out of the materials fee and source and dye their own materials on a case by case basis.
