"Kakishibu" is a traditional Japanese dye of deep amber color which comes from unripe persimmons that have been fermented and aged for more than 2 years. It is a historic dye but it was also used for khaki pants so popular with armed forces. It is an organic dye that reacts to sunlight and ages beautifully with use. Recently, Kakishibu has been recognized as an important alternative to synthetic chemical dyes because its use is kinder to the environment and it has natural anti-bacterial properties, deters insects, and can repel water. Participants will dye samples of different fibers with kakishibu, use kakishibu as an ink or paint on fibers, and use an iron wash to shift the color from amber to gray. It is divine!!!!!!
